In the 1967 movie, “The Graduate,” a young man, recently graduated from college, is given advice from his dad’s best friend, “I’ve got one word for you, Benjamin: Plastics.” If we were giving advice to college grads today, we would add one more word, “alternatives,” making the best advice we have to give, “plastic alternatives.”

About this time of year, many students are near completion of their college year and wondering if they should continue. They keep hearing stories about successful entrepreneurs who gave up on formal education early to get the jump on their entrepreneurial pursuits. They wonder about the value of a college degree in the world of entrepreneurship.

But these concerns discount the more subtle advantages of attending and finishing college.

These advantages are not widely heralded as the primary benefits of completing a formal education. But they are the exact skills you need to succeed as an entrepreneur. We’re not talking about the skills that are taught in the classroom, but the ones you must develop and use just to survive in the classroom.

We’re talking about personal discipline, delayed gratification and good judgment. These behavioral skills are all required to complete your education. They are all required to increase your chances of success in business.

There’s an increasing chorus of proponents urging them to drop out. They say, “You don’t need a formal education any more, especially if you are planning on being an entrepreneur.” They say, “Just get started, the real-world experience will be more effective than the abstract and theoretical education you get in college.” They are quick to support this advice with an impressive list of some hugely successful people who dropped out of college and made gazillions!

Our advice: “Don’t do it!”

Here’s why, if you are truly planning on becoming an entrepreneur, you should stay in school:

Learn How to Learn. College teaches you much more than the subjects offered. Due to the course load, the number of classes you must take per day, and the limited amount of time you have to study, you simply won’t pass unless you develop a systematic approach to learning. You must make some assumptions about the material on a very general level, fill in the blanks and make adjustments to your assumption as you go. All the while you must outline the materials in a way that you can recall and use them – even if it’s only for an exam. You must learn how to learn. And that skill is essential for successful entrepreneurship in the real world.

Learn How to Juggle. College requires that you master another essential skill of entrepreneurship – juggling. You must juggle your time between classes, work, and social activities. You must remain healthy and get enough sleep. Most have to juggle their finances to be able to afford college. This means you must learn how to budget your time and your money. You must prioritize, sometimes going without and deferring gratification, all critical skills in the real world of entrepreneurship.

Learn How to Stick to It. Seeing things through is crucial in the world of entrepreneurship. Completing college demonstrates that you can finish what you start. Commitment and tenacity require practice and reap rewards. In the business world, if you pivot too often you will get the reputation of a quitter, someone not to be taken seriously when they say they are going to do something. As an entrepreneur, your customers buy from you because they believe you will do what you say. Your reputation is on the line.

If you are still are in doubt, then here’s two things you can do:

Take Some Humanities Courses. They are also known as the Liberal Arts or Liberal Studies. Successful entrepreneurs understand and properly use skills they have learned about communication, critical thinking, philosophy, psychology, history, and sociology. Those studies will give you an appreciation for others that will come in handy when selling your ideas to others and communicating leadership skills.

Work Part-Time for an Entrepreneur. Yes, get a job working for someone who is already doing what you want to do. It will give you insight and respect for what is involved. Watching a real entrepreneur face challenges, decide on priorities, and make tough decisions will prepare you for the road ahead.

You’ll notice we did not defend the content of formal education, but did defend the rigor and challenges necessary to see it through. The college experience itself forces discipline, focus and frugality at a time in your life when you need to develop these attributes. They will play a significant part in your future as an entrepreneur. So, stay in school and learn the skills successful entrepreneurs have before you hit the bricks!

What if you gave a back-to-school sale and nobody came? That’s what retailers are facing this year as many college students and grads face the frugal realities of their college debt. In the last recession we saw how interrelated the various elements of the economy are. Remember when they said, “Don’t worry, the recession will be contained in one sector,” but as time progressed, sector after sector collapsed like a line of falling dominos? The first domino to fall this time may be the $80 billion student loan debt.

Some Boomers are quick to point out how they were able to work their way through college without relying on the easy-to-get college loans available to the new generation. Some ask, “Why didn’t they realize that the money would have to be paid back?” as if somehow shifting the blame will make it their problem? This is not their problem. This is our problem!

Just like the stock market and housing sector collapse in the last recession, a major segment of the economy is beginning to buckle. 20 and 30-year-olds, saddled with high levels of student debt, have already begun to cut back on their retail spending. This should be their most productive and strongest time to contribute to our economy. Retailers are already seeing the hit. This will affect jobs, commerce, finances, – everything.

We all need these new buyers to spend to support the future of our economy. Their contribution is essential to our standard of living. None of us can afford to lose the buying power of this generation. Our economy has always been driven by retail sales. It has always been the canary in the coal mine. How can we save the canary? And by “we,” we are talking about retailers, lenders, the government, and the general public.

Perhaps we can reverse engineer a solution by starting with the goals that would work to everyone’s advantage? The folks with student debt get a reprieve. The retailers make the sales they need to keep the economy going, the lenders get paid, the government avoids a catastrophe, and the general public side-steps another recession.

We think a possible solution has to involve a large-scale refinancing program, interest forgiveness, and in some cases, where grad businesses create jobs, actual loan forgiveness. What is the cost of another recession? Can we avoid it with timely, and ultimately less costly, measures designed to free up the productivity and financial contribution of current student debtors? What is the value to the economy of increased sales, new jobs, and increased tax revenue? What is the value of a stronger and more wealthy generation that can ultimately be in a better position to pay those loans off? Are those values greater than the cost of a solution? We think so.

In the meantime, what can retailers do beside further reducing prices and extending payment terms? Retailers have the credibility and the influence to advise their elected officials on the solutions to this pending new recession. They can warn about its attendant tax and financial implications to the government and overall economy. And they can call for immediate action before the next domino falls.

This is when young people are expected to focus on college, career, and beyond.

It seems like parents, relatives and other adults are always asking young people, “What are you going to do when you graduate?” This of course means, “Are you going to college?” and if so, “Where are you going? What will you major in? What will be your profession?” These and other probing questions put kids on the spot. But is it fair to put young people under pressure to make life choices at such an early age?

Being a teenager is challenging enough without the added pressure of, “Quick, kid, make up your mind!” The irony is that they don’t really have the experience and may not be prepared emotionally to make those decisions yet. How would you like to be held to the decisions you made right out of high school – for the rest of your life?

Some societies encourage or enforce some “breathing time” in the form of public service for a few years after high school. Many junior colleges and four-year colleges offer general education programs for students with a non-declared major. These practices give young people a chance to get a few years under their belt before they “have to” declare a major and “make up their minds.” We have met hundreds of professionals, entrepreneurs, and trades people whose livelihood today is far removed from their schooling, so maybe it is a good idea to hold off on major decisions.

There are many factors to consider for high school grads. In a lot of cases, the decision to go to college means moving away from home for the first time, maybe even to a new city or a new state. Then there is the cost. What to do? Borrow at high interest rates and face an ongoing liability that lasts for decades? Or take on a full or part-time job and still spend 20-30 hours per week in studies? And don’t forget the time and attention required by the car and the sweetheart!

Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, California has asked us to speak to their graduating class on Career Day. This is Michael’s alma mater, and we want to give them some encouragement and direction based on our experience. We will tell them the process of going to college, all by itself, is a major skill builder. Here students will learn how to manage funds, classes, time, work, and social activities, the fundamental requirements for any career. Learning skills, including research, communication, and comprehension, can give them a distinct advantage, no matter what path they choose.

It’s OK to not declare a major right off. It’s OK to change your major. Liberal studies are the key to relationship building in any career involving sales, and benefit most management positions. And it’s a good idea to get working experience in the field you are interested in prior to deciding on your major.

What advice would you give a graduating high school student?

He attended City College 1965-67 and it was here, in the early stages of Barefoot, that Mr. Houlihan, who founded the brand with partner Bonnie Harvey, pounded the pavement making the sales.

Mr. Houlihan and Ms. Harvey will speak at the Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at City College at 4:30 p.m. Friday, the first of 10 stops on a nationwide tour to get people fired up about starting a business and to promote their upcoming book, “Barefoot Spirt: How Hardship, Hustle and Heart Built a Bestselling Wine,” which comes out in May.

Admission is free, but seats are limited. Attendees will get access to the eBook version of “The Barefoot Spirit.”

The wine’s roots date to 1965, when San Francisco writer and reporter Davis Bynum created Barefoot Bynum Burgundy at his home in the Bay Area. In 1986, Mr. Houlihan and Ms. Harvey came aboard and Barefoot Cellars was born – in their home.

From 1987 to 1995, Mr. Houlihan personally serviced every account in Santa Barbara.

In 2005, the brand was sold to E. & J. Gallo Winery, the world’s largest family-owned winery and the largest exporter of California wine.

In 2007, Barefoot and Surfrider teamed up to create the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project, a nationwide initiative to keep our beaches “barefoot-friendly.” Each summer, the Project goes coast-to-coast, calling on community volunteers and local Surfrider members to come out and clean their shores.

Not bad for a couple who knew nothing about the business when they started out.

“It wasn’t easy, man,” Mr. Houlihan said in a phone interview Wednesday.

But it was clear from the beginning who would do what.

“Bonnie is very good with what I call minutiae,” Mr. Houlihan said with a chuckle. “But that covers things like money and legal and contracts. She also ran the bottling lines and was in charge of all promotion at the beginning. I am the swashbuckling sword-wielder. I do things like sales and marketing, long-term planning.”

“We respect each other for our different skill sets,” he added.

While the company has gone through lots of change, Ms. Harvey’s footprint is still the label iconography for Barefoot Cellars, which includes still and sparkling wines.

In the talks, as well as in their new book, the couple speaks to an audience much broader than people who want to get into the wine business.

“The three things you gotta know in any business is personnel management, distribution management and cash flow management,” said Mr. Houlihan, whose varied background includes productivity and process improvement.

“You have to know how to treat people so you can maintain and grow relationships. Also you have to know strategic allies. ‘Who’s going to make out if we make out?’ ”

He puts a premium on distribution management. After all, you could have the best idea for a product in the world, but if you can’t get it to customers, what good is it?

“Warehouses are full of good ideas that are sitting unsold. I’m sorry, but it’s more about distribution than the product or how good it is for the price.”

These days, Mr. Houlihan is a principal in the wine consulting business Houlihan and Jones, and he and Ms. Harvey produce free business blogs on two sites every week, www.barefootwinefounders.com andwww.thebrandauthority.net .

Their book is available for download at both sites.

While his work in the wine business these days is more focused on helping others make their brands successful, Mr. Houlihan says one thing about the industry that hasn’t changed – the regulation. Each state has its own rules when it comes to what you can sell, where you can sell it and how much you can sell it for.

“We’re the United States of America, but from an alcohol beverage standpoint, when you’re trying to sell wine interstate, it’s a loose confederation of independent countries held together by Oprah Winfrey and Ricky Lake,” he said.

“We’re selling ideas now, not wine.”

But today, we discovered a whole new reason to love this gem of the Pacific Coast, The Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. This unique school takes the increasing demand for entrepreneurial education head on, and at the community college level, no less.

This afternoon, we enjoyed a wonderful beachside luncheon with Melissa Moreno, the school’s Director. She has been instrumental in the creation and development of the Center. Only three years old, it’s already getting the attention and support of several successful entrepreneurs.

Check out their fireside-chat format conversations with these notables on video at their site. These chats are jam packed with excited students interacting with real entrepreneurial successes.

Today’s entrepreneurial students want case studies from real business founders. They want to hear their story and ask them practical questions about how they overcame hardship, challenges and undercapitalization.

Our economy has proven time and again that it’s the entrepreneurs that create new businesses, new jobs, and innovation. Today, we face big challenges. For many graduates, sometimes the only source of employment is self employment.

The Scheinfeld Center provides a big head start for anyone thinking about starting their own business, whether they are looking for credit, or just want to get the latest academic disciplines or practical tools necessary for successful entrepreneurship.

Like schools everywhere, they are struggling with the economy. This seems ironic since they are one of the obvious vehicles to turn the economy around. They deserve your interest and support, so please help pass the word about the Scheinfeld Center. We need more schools like this!

We were honored to be asked to present our experience to the Scheinfeld students next March. Now we have another great reason to visit Santa Barbara. We hope the lessons we learned, sometimes the hard way, will help the next generation of entrepreneurs to achieve success!
