The one lingering question that remains is whether you should open a franchise or an independent shop. There are pros and cons to both sides, but you&#8217;ll need the following points to help you decide which decision is right for your situation.</p>
<p><strong>An Established Brand.</strong> Brand recognition is incredibly motivating for shoppers. By flying the franchise flag over your car wash or other business, you may be able to draw in more customers than you would with an independent concept. Investors should think of both the <a href="http://www.inc.com/curtis-kroeker/independent-business-or-franchise-how-to-decide.html" target="_blank">positives and negatives</a> of working with an established brand. In most cases, increased brand awareness is a positive thing, but if the brand has been blemished in recent years, becoming affiliated with it may do you more harm than good.</p>
<p><strong>Novel Ideas. </strong>When you create your own company, you have a large outlet for your creativity. You don&#8217;t have to worry about whether or not a certain product or service is allowed under your franchise model. If you decide to open a car wash, for instance, you can invent your own methods and techniques to make your clients&#8217; cars as clean as they can be. On the flip side, however, you will also have to invent all of your own ideas from the company name to the company logo. Luckily, there are organizations in place that can help you with that. <a href="http://www.logogarden.com/samples/automotive-logos/car-wash-logos/" target="_blank">Logo Garden</a>, for example, helps independent entrepreneurs create logos. Other companies can be used for website design, advertising and key development themes.</p>
<p><strong>Franchises May Be Recession-Proof. </strong>Entrepreneurs often become interested in launching their own company in the midst of a recession. Due to lost jobs or pay cuts, prospective business owners want more control over their earnings. Starting a mom-and-pop business during an economic downturn can be scary, but opening a franchise during this same time period can be incredibly liberating. According to Forbes, a <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/caroltice/2012/05/09/the-top-10-fast-growing-franchise-chains-that-powered-through-the-recession/" target="_blank"> recession can be a bonanza</a> for a franchise. The combination of relatively cheap real estate and better locations give franchise entrepreneurs the edge that they need.</p>
<p><strong>Cost. </strong>The ultimate factor in your decision may be the cost of your project. If you opt to take the franchise route, you will have to pay a franchise fee, but overall, your costs may be cheaper than opening an independent shop. Franchises have greater purchasing power than their independent counterparts. Because franchises purchase in bulk, you will get on discount on all of your products and supplies.</p>
<p><strong>Potential for Success. </strong>If you like to control your own potential for success, an independent operation may be better for you, but if you want to rely on a concept that has a proven track record for success, you may want to opt for a franchise. In addition to providing you with a model of success, a franchise may provide you with additional training and other support.</p>

Sure, we looked at qualifications, but we looked beyond that.</p>
<p>We wanted people who were not only qualified, but also had foundational qualities we could build upon. We wanted to see our staff achieve the highest and best use of their talents – many of which did not manifest for a year or so.</p>
<p>We looked for enthusiasm, confidence, honesty and integrity. We also looked for a willingness to learn. And, they had to be fun. It is much like finding a new friend, and we created great friends in the process.</p>
<p>The key to developing great people is to start with good people &#8211; and then provide the environment, encouragement, resources, and flexibility for them to become their best.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Culture.</strong> A positive company culture is essential to the nurturing people. Constructive attitudes toward mistakes and a policy of permission allow for greater creativity. Use positive language. Talk about what you want, not what you don’t want.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Compensation.</strong> Brian Tracy says most performance problems are caused by compensation systems. Reward for production and growth. Clearly state what you want in each phase of their training.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Encouragement.</strong> Catch your people doing something right. Tell them two things they did well for every one thing they can improve. As their “boss,” you become an authority figure they look to for validation.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Monitoring.</strong> Know what questions to ask of the data. Identify the metrics that best quantify performance. Make the reporting intervals as short as possible, especially during the first 90 days.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Mentoring. </strong>A person<strong> </strong>is<strong> </strong>worthy of your time when they quickly pick up on concepts and extrapolate principals to other applications. Put more energy into him or her. Your time and efforts will be rewarded when you start with the right people.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Acknowledgement.</strong> Give public acknowledgement, and tie it in to how it affects everybody’s salary, security, and potential. When you educate staff about what individual team members contribute, this encourages them to do even better.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Written Resources.</strong> Have a policy of documentation. The same mistakes will not be repeated, the nuances of a job can be passed on, and your new hire can study what is expected of her. To keep job descriptions current, ask everyone to update their own annually.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Training.</strong> Having written materials will reduce the training time. Stage this information so the new hire can focus on mastering one aspect at a time. Expect to spend three to six months in training before proficiency is achieved.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Conferences.</strong> People want to improve their skill set. Of course, this will add to their resumes. However, if you are paying them right, they won’t leave, and they will create the income for their own raises. So, yes, send them to training conferences.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Architecture.</strong> Natural and supplemental lighting, air conditioning, workspace, and noise levels all effect production and concentration.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Best IT. </strong>Probably the most frustrating part of any new job is learning the IT and protocols. Have an IT “guy” who can quickly “fix” problems. Make your systems intuitive and user friendly.</li>
</ul>
<p>To get the best out of your people, find out what they excel at. Then, redesign their jobs to fit those skills. Ask others to pick up the aspects of the former job that still need to be done. You might be surprised at the positive response. Don’t put the square peg in the round hole. Build a square hole.</p>

Some even feel guilty or “irresponsible.”  Others rack up unused vacation time for its monetary value. Still others see honor in putting their job ahead of a timely break.</p>
<p>Whatever your reason for not taking regular vacations, it can’t measure up to the benefits you and your job receive when you put business aside and give yourself a rest.</p>
<p>Regular vacations not only give you and your people a healthy recharge, they actually help your business. A good policy is to make vacation mandatory and start with yourself.</p>
<p>Here are some suggestions we’ve discovered to get the most out of your vacation:</p>
<p><strong>1. Take two weeks in a row</strong>. Long weekends are great, and they certainly break up the year, but an extended vacation is required to really wind down. After a week, you’re finally relaxed enough to start to really enjoy yourself. So do!</p>
<p><strong>2. Put a buck on it.</strong> Plan the trip. Buy a ticket. Make reservations. The minute you do, you’ll know your vacation is going to happen. Even if its 6 months away, you are no longer working “indefinitely!&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>3. Count down and prioritize</strong> your work. You only have so much time to get your work done before you leave. Decide what needs to be completed before you go and what can wait until you get back.</p>
<p><strong>4. Make an announcement</strong> to your coworkers, customers and vendors. You will notice a new sense of urgency on the part of all who depend on you. People will be more willing to make accommodations to help you make your vacation date.</p>
<p><strong>5. Spend a day or two at home. </strong>Decompress. Take a breath and realize that you are now going to do something different. It’s not what you leave; it’s what you return to. So straighten out your home office as well. The comfort of knowing you will return to a well-organized home front will be well worth it!</p>
<p><strong>6. Go somewhere and stay put.</strong> Many folks like to see how many places they can see in a week or two. You may need a vacation just to recuperate from the wild, whirl wind tour. It not necessarily how much you see, it’s how much you relax.</p>
<p><strong>7. Unplug – literally.</strong> Take at least a period of time to be unconnected. Get your eyes off the screen and your mind off work for several consecutive days. Focus on your new surroundings.</p>
<p><strong>8. Watch your diet.</strong> Be careful not to over do it with food and drink. Why wake up with a headache and indigestion on your vacation? Give your body a break, too.</p>
<p><strong>9. Get some exercise.</strong> Make it a point to walk or even hike if you are in shape. Get around on your feet as much as possible. Remember you are probably sitting most of the time at your job.</p>
<p><strong>10. Read something positive.</strong> Try not to keep up with the world. It will go on just fine without you staying up on the latest crisis. You will hear about the really important things anyway.</p>
<p><strong>11. Make a soft landing.</strong> Spend your last full day at home. Take some time to unpack and enjoy your pictures. Get caught up at your own pace before you go back to work.</p>
<p>You will increase your objectivity, focus, creativity, and production with a timely break. If you still have a hard time justifying your vacation, do it to benefit your job and your business. You’ll thank yourself for doing it!</p>

<p>When you look at the earth from space, or even your city from an airplane, you can’t help but think how relatively small we really are in the scheme of things. As you slowly ascend you see your business below you. Then, as you get a little higher, you see other <a class="zem_slink" title="Business" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business" rel="wikipedia">businesses</a> and communities come into view. Soon you see your city, state, country, hemisphere and then the planet. Down there somewhere is your business, only now it just part of the great mix.</p>
<p>You may have a distinctive <a class="zem_slink" title="Product (business)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_%28business%29" rel="wikipedia">product</a> or service at a great value, and a cute label or package. Still, you feel stuck in the same place you were last year. Now, consider the 10,000-foot view: Here are some lessons you can learn from this elevated position that will stimulate new ideas and encourage <a class="zem_slink" title="Creative problem solving" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_problem_solving" rel="wikipedia">creative problem solving</a>.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong><a class="zem_slink" title="Look (American magazine)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look_%28American_magazine%29" rel="wikipedia">Look</a> at your business from the viewpoint of an outsider.</strong> When you see it as others see it, and not just as your staff views it, it may surprise you. Your staff’s view may be slanted by their own professional organizations or their desire to fit in to other mainstream companies. Your end-user may have a completely different prospective.</li>
<li><strong>Take a close look at where you can improve your strategic alliances.</strong> Notice what organizations will benefit by your success. Do you have suppliers that will grow if you grow? What non-profits can you align your product with that your customers support?</li>
<li><strong>When you look at the big picture, you can identify the larger forces at work.</strong> Know your end-user, their method of communication, their economic circumstances, their habits, their culture, their psychology. When you address them in the manner they are most comfortable with, they will respond in a more positive manner.</li>
<li><strong>Discover what’s been out of fashion too long.</strong> Most everything comes back eventually. Why not be the first to bring it back? Convertibles were off the market for over a decade until the <a class="zem_slink" title="Ford Mustang" href="http://www.fordvehicles.com/cars/mustang/?space=Cars" rel="homepage">Ford Mustang</a>; <a class="zem_slink" title="Science fiction film" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction_film" rel="wikipedia">science fiction movies</a> were as well until “<a class="zem_slink" title="Star Wars" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars" rel="wikipedia">Star Wars</a>.”</li>
<li><strong>Note the distribution requirements to get your product to your end-user.</strong> Even if you think your distributor or retail buyer will take care of all the necessary details along the way, realize how you can help them. Then do it.</li>
<li><strong>Take a broader view of your industry.</strong> Who else is in the same general <a class="zem_slink" title="Distribution (business)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distribution_%28business%29" rel="wikipedia">distribution channel</a>? How do they position themselves? Who is the leader? What was their approach?  Now, determine how your product or service excels, or fits a need that may not be satisfied by your competitors.</li>
<li><strong>Take inventory when you face a challenge requiring a creative solution.</strong> Look around and see what assets you have. Don’t be afraid to look at all your problems at once. Using the 10,000-foot view, you may see other businesses that also face challenges. More often than not, the best and most elegant solution is the answer to more than one problem, for more than one person or business.</li>
</ol>
<p>You can encourage and reward this type of thinking by your staff with permission, acknowledgement and incentives to take the 10,000-foot view. Take the fastest way out of the box &#8211; straight up!</p>
