We had to give our undivided attention to a book or a lecture to discover a solution. Our brains had to function!</p>
<p>We’d be forced to identify and extract the underlying principle behind examples obtained from real life experiences, textbooks or teachers. We knew we couldn’t possibly learn and retain every example. So we had to grasp the principles so we could apply them to future problems. We would have to recall our learned list of principles to discover how they might apply to a new problem that we had never seen before. We used these principles like tools that could be adjusted to resolve challenges and problems we experienced.</p>
<h2>Instant Access at Our Fingertips</h2>
<p>But, why go through all that trouble if you could instantly access every example on Google or YouTube? So much for looking for the principle and retaining it. MacGyver R.I.P.!</p>
<p>We have friends who have thousands of books downloaded on their reading devices. When we ask, “Why do you have all those books when you know you will never read them?” They say, “Just having them makes me feel like I have sort of read them. I have access to them and that’s a step closer to reading them!” So much for feeling obligated to read a book you bought.</p>
<p>It’s interesting that so many folks are worried that robots will take away their jobs when they already think their “work” is simply to find an example, cut and paste. No problem solving is required for that. Simply oversimplify a challenge, copy a pre-existing solution, and paste a one-size-fits-all “solution.” Isn’t that what robots already do?</p>
<p>Instead of solving the challenge using principles, you might just say, “Like What? Like What? Like What?” expecting and demanding that there is an exact example you can copy and paste. If only someone, usually your boss, would just tell you.  It’s so much easier to not have to reason it out! It’s so much easier to not have to remember things! Besides, why bother when it’s all right there at the end of your arm?</p>
<p>And that’s just the problem, isn’t it? Today’s tech natives are born with a crutch on the end of their arm that it can threaten their memory and cognitive abilities. Parts of the brain we used to depend upon are getting used less and less. As we become more dependent on technology, we rely less on our own cognitive abilities.</p>
<h2>Learning from Stories</h2>
<p>Our friend and business namesake, Marilyn Barefoot, writes a compelling and <a href="http://barefootbrainstorming.com/blog/brain-tech/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">well-researched post </a>on this subject. She reports on growing warnings about how dependence on tech can decrease our attention span, make us more easily distracted, impair our social interaction, and well, get us downright addicted.</p>
<p>Marilyn is an expert on brainstorming and story as a form of learning. In her post <a href="https://www.facebook.com/barefootbrainstorming/photos/a.245065112209362/1883298111719379/?type=3&amp;theater" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Your Brain on Stories,”</a> she examines how researchers have actually measured the parts of the brain that are activated and the rewarding chemicals released when we listen to a story. It&#8217;s fascinating! And it’s hopeful.</p>
<p>People learn from listening to stories. When you create the scene being described together in your mind, you are pulling the props, colors, and moods out of your memory and imagination. Then, you are attaching the action to that creation. Because you are participating in the reception of the story, you have an investment in it. Now you are more likely to recall the principles that the story demonstrated later when you need them.</p>

This is your chance to show your new employer that you are going to work out. Here are some helpful hints we recommend to get the most out of these important first days:</p>
<p><strong>Attitude.</strong>What&#8217;s important is that you learn the company and the job &#8211; fast. They are making a big investment in you by taking someone away from their job and losing that productivity to show you the ropes and educate you about your new position. So, start with some mental housecleaning. Don&#8217;t try to justify your misconceptions with arguments about why you thought this or that. It&#8217;s not important. And similarly, don&#8217;t just parrot &#8220;got it&#8221; to everything they say because you think they expect you to instantly get it. They don&#8217;t, and as a matter of fact they will have more respect for you if you ask questions.</p>
<p><strong>Big Picture.</strong> Look and listen for how your job fits in to the business process. Who is the customer? How do they buy your company&#8217;s products and services, how does your company produce them, and how does their money get to your paycheck? How does your job help make that happen? If they don&#8217;t tell you, ask. Understanding the big picture will make you much more valuable to the company.</p>
<p><strong>Concepts.</strong>It’s more than just what and how, it&#8217;s why. Your ability to learn the concept behind the lessons you are taught is the key to making better decisions. Your ability to<a title="How To Get a Raise by Extrapolating" href="https://thebarefootspirit.com/blog/2014/03/08/how-to-get-a-raise-by-extrapolating/" target="_blank"> extrapolate </a>will prepare you to apply the concept to a new situation. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.</p>
<p><strong>Notes. </strong>Don&#8217;t try to remember everything that is said. Write it down. There is so much to learn at first, you can&#8217;t absorb it all verbally. Ask for info graphics, and if they don&#8217;t have them, make your own. Review your notes and make a list of new questions. When they see you taking notes they will have more confidence that you are serious.</p>
<p><strong>Documents. </strong>Every job has a slew of documents from manuals to forms, policies and procedures, job descriptions to contract clauses and checklists. Get to know all of them, how to use them, and why they exist.</p>
<p><strong>Command.</strong> Ask for an organization chart and study the chain of command to get a picture of your company&#8217;s organization.  Learn the outside companies and vendors your company depends on to conduct business. Learn who you will be working with and what their requirements are. Understand what approvals are required that effect your job and the lead times required.</p>
<p><strong>Culture.</strong> Find out what is allowed and what isn&#8217;t. Learn how you are expected to dress. What permissions you are granted? Does your company have fun or is it more serious? Are mistakes frowned upon or seen as an opportunity to improve procedures? Are suggestions welcomed, and in what areas and through whom? Find out who can best answer your questions about history, management style, expectations and limitations.</p>
<p><strong>Ownership.</strong> Don&#8217;t just attend work, own your job! Be responsible for its effective and dependable operation. Don&#8217;t let your boss have to tell you about something you&#8217;ve neglected. Don&#8217;t make excuses for mistakes or point fingers. If one doesn&#8217;t exist, make a list of all the reoccurring deadlines that happen during the year. Don&#8217;t depend on your boss to check your work. Check your own work. Do the maximum, not the minimum.</p>
<p>The orientation and training period is a two-way street. They tell you about the job and you ask questions. Good luck!</p>

What’s more likely is that they started out small and sometimes took years to gain traction.</p>
<p>As we’ve said many times before, it’s not the quality of the product, the price, or the demand so much as it is mastering the distribution and timing.</p>
<p>They say you can move the Queen Mary if you exert enough pressure over time. You can push with all your might for years and then, at last, slowly, it begins to move! You finally overcame the momentum and you are gaining traction. What if you gave up and stopped pushing after the first year?</p>
<p>We read in <em>Entrepreneur</em>, <em>Fast Company</em>, and <em>Inc.</em> magazines about seemingly overnight start-up successes. It almost looks easy. It seems like you can have instant success with just the right product at just the right time. Although there are some examples of that kind of success, it’s the less glamorous, and unheralded, “get rich slow schemes” that are more common, and more dependable.</p>
<p>The number-one ingredient in start-up success is not necessarily the great idea, the great price, or even the great demand. It is tenacity!</p>
<p><strong>Here are 5 Tenets of Tenacity:</strong></p>
<p><strong>1) Deferred Gratification.</strong> Sometimes you work 12 hours a day and weekends just to get your idea off the ground. You may even have to forgo vacations in the early stages. Take advantage of pop-up social opportunity? Forget about it.</p>
<p><strong>2) Belief in your Concept.</strong> When you are new or different, you’ll be hard pressed to find people in the distribution channels that will give you a shot. You have to hold onto a deep-seated belief in your product and its eventual success. You have to constantly imagine your customer enjoying your product even when others try to discourage you.</p>
<p><strong>3) Focus.</strong> Understanding your priorities is job one. As events unfold and the hoops you have to jump through present themselves, it’s easy to get distracted. Keep your eye on your goal and focus on the big picture. The details are tedious, frustrating, and take time, but the realization of your vision is well worth the struggle.  <strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>4) Support.</strong> Gain encouragement from the ever-increasing number of supporters you attract along the way. Starting out small, the positive feedback you get from even a relatively few happy customers will give you the confidence to press on. The support you get from other businesses that have an interest in your success will validate your concept.</p>
<p><strong>5) Progress.</strong> Yes, it may take a lot longer that you thought, but you <em>are</em> making progress albeit ever so humble. Each little victory is one step closer to your goal. There’s nothing like actual sales to demonstrate the viability of your product. And every mistake you make, if treated as a learning experience, will improve your chances of success.</p>
<p>Today, tenacity has many fashionable names, like <em>drive</em>, <em>charge</em>, and <em>the right stuff</em>, but whatever you call it, it’s just plain old <em>stick-to-it-ness.</em> Starting a new business is easy and fun. But once you discover the surprising amount of time, hard work, and sacrifice necessary, it’s your tenacity that will see you through. And when you <em>do</em> succeed, try not to laugh when they say, “Wow! That idea just took off!”</p>
