With all the recent scandals about how your personal likes, clicks, shares, and the groups you’ve joined are being used as products for sale to advertisers, political activists, and even foreign agents, are you finally ready to pay for social networking? “Well, shouldn’t that be free?” you may ask. “It always has been free. Why should I start paying now?”

One question is, how would a “free” social network support itself without income? This is the question social networks have been wrestling with since their inception. The answer is simple, they can’t! What we have today is income models that basically use you and the records of your activities as the product. And who are the paying customers? Anyone who will pay for that information and access to you, of course.

No big surprise there. For decades, even before social media, our snail mailboxes were stuffed with junk mail. The junk mail senders were using information about us from public records and purchasing histories to know how to zero in on us. With social media, we have, in effect, made our choices public and they can be mined and analyzed to tailor ads catering not only to our buying patterns, but to our specific ideological patterns and tendencies. Now they’re really zeroing in on us. This is very valuable data!

It seemed okay and quite innocent when the commercial marketeers hit us with ads seconds after we made a purchase. It was commercial, they were selling stuff, and that’s just part of business, we thought. But now it’s clear that anyone could buy the data and use it for whatever sinister purposes they want. They can interfere with our elections, undermine our institutions, exacerbate our political divisions, vilify those we oppose, and validate our suspicions – no matter which “side” we are on!

“Divide and conquer” is an ancient and classic war strategy. It is being used effectively today by the weaponization of the social media. You voluntarily provide the data that makes you vulnerable. It gets sold to the groups who use that data to manipulate you and others.

There’s talk today about regulating social media. These regulations would presumably make it harder to sell sensitive data, post hateful comments, disseminate false news, and proliferate political messages. But they would apparently leave in place the sale of personal data for commercial uses. At this point social media platforms want to protect their source of income while appearing to reduce the abuse of this data for political reasons.

Because the service would still be “free,” the proponents expect wide ranging support. But it will be almost impossible for the platforms to prevent political abuse while allowing commercial access to your data.

So, we ask again, would you pay a monthly or annual fee for a social networking service that used your fees as their income stream and not the sale of your data? Proponents of this idea say that fees would be minimal to support the platform and provide the services you now enjoy for “free.” And your data would be private!

Imagine a platform where you are not solicited either commercially or politically. Imagine a platform where your choices and data history were not for sale. In other words, imagine a platform where you are the customer and not the product! What is that worth to you?

With the next scandal just around the corner, this “preposterous” idea of paying for something we now get for free may become practical, feasible, and even desirable. At some point, you might prefer being the customer rather than the product! This may be a disruption whose time is rapidly approaching. After all, there is no “free” lunch!

With the end of the year scramble, celebrating the Holidays, and then all that planning, energy, and the new initiatives we put out in the first quarter of the new year, it’s only natural to become preoccupied, focused, and concentrated on our goals.

But now, it’s Spring already, and before long, the year will be half over. Spring is nature’s “new year.” This is when it’s obvious to everyone that life is returning, and it’s time to grow again. Isn’t it time we renew some important relationships that might have fallen by the wayside in our struggle to grow our businesses? It is so important that we all stay connected, really connected, with our friends who mean the most to us. Let’s call them now!

Old Folks. When was the last time you spoke to the oldest living members of your family? A word from you can make their day! Many seniors feel alone and forgotten. Letting them know that they are important to you can actually improve their attitude, and their health. Sure, they’re unplugged, and technology has passed them by, but that’s all the more reason to reconnect with a personal phone call to make them feel like they’re still part of your life.

New Folks. What about those new folks you met that you liked so much – that you haven’t spoken to since? Take a look at your calendar. Identify the guests you have had, or visitors you have met on the trips you’ve taken in the past year. There is still time to cement those relationships with a friendly call or note reminding them of the good times you shared and that you are happy to have met them.

Old Customers. What about those former customers you are no longer doing business with? Take a look at your accounts over the past year or even two years. Look for clients and customers with whom you have already concluded business. Now is a great time to reach out and say hello. You want them to know that they were more than just a customer. Ask them how they’re doing and what their challenges are today. You may be surprised they can provide leads to even more business.

Foreigners. How about the friends that live in another part of the world you haven’t seen for a year or so? Think about the trips you’ve taken in the past few years to other countries. You met foreign nationals and American tourists. Whatever happened to them? You have that wonderful experience in common with them. They would love to hear from you again. We found that especially with foreign nationals, they can become friends for life if you just stay in touch.

Disabled. Who do you know who’s had an injury you can check up on? Who do you know who had a serious illness or underwent an operation requiring therapy and recovery? While you have been focused on your business, these people were taken out of the action in their businesses for a period of time. Some of them may still be recovering. They feel somewhat isolated themselves knowing that the world is spinning on without them. Spring is a great time to call these folks, wish them well, and tell them you are hoping for their speedy recovery.

As we come out of winter and into spring with the promise of new growth, new opportunities, and new friends, this is a great time to secure the important relationships we already have. Don’t let them drift away or become part of the past.

A simple telephone call or even a short note right now can keep those relationships alive and healthy. These folks will be so glad to hear from you and catch up. Don’t try to do it on Facebook or with a once a year summary letter. It’s too impersonal. Communicate just with them and just for them. Show them you care and still intend to include them in your life. It will mean the world to them!

Access to technology is already empowering many of us to “hang up the shingle” and go into business for ourselves. With the explosion of new service providers, you can outsource almost every business function, and you can quickly become your own CEO.

Even though your new company may be spartan with just a few employees if any, you will still be responsible to your customers to get the job done and on time, no matter how much is outsourced. The majority of your team may work for other companies and probably will.

But how will you orchestrate all these in-house and outsourced people? How will you hold these folks accountable? How will you know when to hire and how to compensate? What form will your planning take? What will your contracts look like? How about your communications? What about cashflow, personnel, and distribution management? What about decision making? And what about leadership?

Is there an easy way to learn and apply the best practices successful CEO’s have been following for decades? And what about the most recent breakthroughs that can help you succeed? How would you like a neat little playbook that outlines and summarizes 70 of the best classic and modern CEO tools, all proven to be successful?

Our friend and associate Jim Canfield has just published such a CEO “user’s manual.” We think it should be on the desk of every CEO and every self-employed entrepreneur. It’s called CEO Tools 2.O: A System to Think, Manage, and Lead Like a CEO. Jim’s new book updates and pays homage to the famous original work, CEO Tools: The Nuts-n-Bolts of Business for Every Manager’s Success by Kraig Kramers published back in 2002.

CEO Tools 2.0 is a must have for any CEO, president, business owner, or senior executive who wants to execute easier and have more time – while increasing growth and profits. Sound like you?

Jim has a patent ability to distill complex ideas, policies and procedures into easy to understand principles and processes. Then he backs them up with tons of examples to help you get the message. His book is organized according to the seven steps of “The CEO Tools Business System”:

Set the Direction. Clarify your overall goals, vision, and action plans with a One-Page Business Plan and use it to better communicate your goals to everyone you depend upon.

Communicate to Build Trust. Ask everyone you depend on how to solve the challenges you face. They will surprise you with their solutions.

Track Metrics and Give Feedback. Identify and track key performance indicators with the Quarterly Priorities Manager (QPM) and the Trailing 12-Month Chart (T12M).

Anticipate the Future and Create It. Ensure your company’s future with tools like What’s Next and the 7 Key plans every business should have in place.

Attract, Hire, and Coach Winners. Put winners in the top 5 customer impacting jobs and make sure they agree on what constitutes excellent performance. Then empower them.

Build an Autonomous Company. Be free of day-to-day involvement with leaders who focus on long-term strategic issues and confidently keep daily issues on track.

Celebrate Successes. Spread recognition and appreciation throughout the company with programs for all team members designed to appreciate the contributions of other team members

CEO Tools 2.0 builds out each step with tools you can use and real case studies showing where and how they have been used effectively. Whether you have a big staff or work with an outsourced team, it’s teamwork that will increase your growth and profits, ease your execution, and save you time. CEO Tools 2.0 is the playbook for winning teams!

From your creditors to your employees, good business relationships are built on trust. Can the people who depend on you, confidently rely on you to treat them fairly? Once you have proven your dependability, they will make allowances for you and extend their level cooperation. This is essential to your business success.

How much will you save on loan interest with extended credit, easier terms and complementary warehousing? How much will you save on hiring and training by reducing turnover, engaging your people and having them go the extra mile for you? How much will you save on advertising with cooperative distributers, loyal consumers and customers who become advocates? The sooner you demonstrate your trustworthiness, the sooner you’ll receive these benefits and more!

You know that the time devoted to your job is taking you away from the attention your startup needs. The longer you keep your job, the longer it takes your startup to achieve positive cash flow. On the other hand, you need the income from your job just to cover food, clothing and shelter, never mind the capital that is required for the startup itself. It’s quite a dilemma.

But let’s look at it from another angle and perhaps the right answer will become clear. For one thing, when you quit is not a date. It’s a series of metrics. So, let’s rephrase the question(s) based on those metrics:

How many loyal customers do I need?

How much do I need to sell each of them to pay my bills for three months minimum?

These are sales-based questions and should be the primary indicators of when you can afford to quit your job.

Many startups, unfortunately, rely on the same “hockey stick” sale projections they used in their business plan – developed before they actually got into the nitty gritty of sales. Did it take into account the cost of sales (i.e., the expense of making sales happen and the costs of servicing what you sell)? Many regret quitting their jobs before they found out it’s the cash flow projection, and not the business plan, that indicates their business’s sustainability.

You might say, “I’ll just borrow the funds to start my business,” or “I’ll just sell some of my equity to some investors,” or even, “My partner will keep working while I start the business.” Any of these might lead you to believe you don’t need to think about continued sales from loyal customers before you get started. But you do! Once you burn through your funds on research and overhead, you’ll have to go back and beg for more. Only this time, without adequate sales, your investors are much less likely give you more money to “burn.” And that’s when you wish you hadn’t quit your job quite that early in the game.

The fact is, you need to have funds on hand to cover at least three months’ worth of expenses before you even think about quitting your job. You cannot rely on all your funds coming solely from sales.

This means that before you even start, you have to identify the “low hanging fruit.” These are the customers that you have presold on your idea. They have made at least a verbal commitment to buy your products. More importantly, you have learned exactly how they want to buy your products and for how much.

Whether you get the three months’ worth of funding from savings, trades, prepays, loans, investors, your partner, or a combination, you still have to establish an early sales pipeline. Even if your investors are so enamored with your idea that they themselves assume smooth sailing on the revenue side, for your own sake you had better make this job #1.

Once you quit your job, there’s usually no going back. And even if you do everything right and establish a sales pipeline that will cover your bills, starting a business is still a big risk. So, as Clint Eastwood said in his 1971 classic movie, Dirty Harry, “Are ya feelin’ lucky?” You will feel a lot more “lucky” if you have the customers before you quit your job!

In today’s workplace, we see employees keeping vital information to themselves and not reporting it to others who have asked them for it …and need it to do or complete their job. This “sitting-on-it” style hurts everyone on the team.

In business, keeping your boss, your colleagues, and your customers up to date is essential. It builds trust in your relationships. It’s easy to say, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it,” but actions speak louder than words.

You must actually tell the person who asked for the information what you found out. Just because you know, doesn’t mean you can sit on the information. When you are asked to check into something, it is assumed that you will share what you have found.

You can get back to others with a comfort call, a timely update, or a status report. Or you can wait in silence until they call you and ask, “Hey, what’s going on?”

Nothing is more irritating than having to check up to see if someone really did what they said they would do, are still working on it, or dropped it entirely! Not knowing causes anxiety.

So why do so many people go dark after they say they’ve “got it covered”? The fact is, it leaves the requestors, guessing. It makes them wonder what’s going on, not just with the request, but what’s going on with you.

Are you deliberately going dark, hoping they will forget the request? Are you depending on them to remind you? Are you dropping it until they mention it again? Are you so late in your response that you are embarrassed to admit to your tardy status because you think you will get in trouble? Do you think they don’t need to know until the task is completed, even if weeks go by?

Do you realize that this makes the requesting party anxious? Their mind reels with the possibilities and it keeps them awake at night.

Whatever your excuse, it’s damaging to your company, your team, and your reputation as a professional businessperson! No news is worse that bad news.

If you get a request that is a long-term, ongoing project, give the requesting party a comfort call or shoot them a memo every few days.

Timely status reporting has so many benefits. For one, even if you’ve had no progress, it puts the requesting party’s mind at ease. They don’t have to wonder about you or question your motives. It just plain shows respect. Suspense is stressful.

For another, it says, “I am keeping you up to date, so you can trust me to not drop it.” When you demonstrate that you care about relieving their anxieties, they will see you as professional, reliable, and indispensable. When you show you care about the requesting party, they will care more about you.

In any case, do not let so much time go by that they feel compelled to ask you about it. If you keep them in the dark on a regular basis and they find themselves frequently asking you what’s up, don’t think they don’t notice. This kind of sloppiness can result in lost relationships with your vendors, customers, associates, and employers. You are jeopardizing the effectiveness of your team mates. You could even lose your job.

Show others the common courtesies you expect. Put their minds at ease. Show them you are on top of it. Earn their trust …and your own security. Get back to them on a timely basis!

Terms like honesty, integrity and morality are common. Some companies get more specific and talk about treating people equally, being a good neighbor, or even making the world a better place. But today’s customers and employees are looking for specifics that can help them justify an association with your company.

Most companies want to keep their core values statement as politically neutral as possible. They consider “political” issues those that have been politicized, even if they are more a matter of survival and security. For instance, a company may use a term like “fairness” but not take a public stand on massive deportation, even though they have employees whose families would be impacted. They want to play it “safe.”

Companies may use terms like “integrity” but have a huge carbon footprint. Or they may say they are an “environmentally conscious” company, but their product comes in a single-use plastic container. Is it “ethical” to damage the environment to make a buck? At some point your company may be called upon to take a public stand. You don’t want to be put to the test trying to justify your apparent two-faced stance.

When we were building the Barefoot Wine brand, we decided to support several non-profit conservation groups that were, at the time, considered to be radicals with intentions to damage the economy. They included The Surfrider Foundation that was cleaning beaches and the ocean, The League to Save Lake Tahoe that was keeping pollution out of the lake, the Mono Lake Committee that was supporting the restoration of Mono Lake and the Mono Basin, which meant reducing water consumption in the greater L.A. Metro.

We were advised against “taking sides” on these “political issues.” We were admonished that people who made their money polluting and destroying the environment wouldn’t buy our brand if we took such a stand. In 1990 during the AIDS crisis we came out in favor of LGBT rights. Again, we were admonished not to take sides on such a “political” issue.

Turns out we were on the right side of history, but also we gained a big advantage in the marketplace with these marginalized groups. They saw us as early supporters and as a result, they became loyal customers and advocates. Was it risky? Yes. Did we suffer some push back? You bet! But the detractors eventually became supporters as they “evolved” and became better educated over time. And for us, as a new product, we needed customers even if it meant that some people disagreed with our stance. The one’s who agreed created our solid customer base.

Today, when you realize that you are dependent on selling your products to folks who are being marginalized by race, religion, or sexual preference, can you really afford to remain silent and play it safe? Is your company’s silence on these issues “ethical?” Is it even good business?

It’s time for companies to takes another look at those “values” they have hanging in the reception area. It is time for companies to take a stand and perform according to their values, rather than merely stating them on a plaque. Their customers are looking more closely now to justify their spending choices with companies that share their values. And employees are concerned about the real values demonstrated by the company that gives them their paychecks.

It’s time for companies to build a strong and loyal customer base by taking a stand on the issues that affect their customers and employees. Why risk losing business with corporate silence to a competitor who sees the advantage of speaking out?

About this time of year, many students are questioning the value of staying in school. There’s an increasing chorus of proponents urging them to drop out. They say, “You don’t need a formal education any more, especially if you are planning on being an entrepreneur.” They say, “Just get started, the real-world experience will be more effective than the abstract and theoretical education you get in college.” They are quick to support this advice with an impressive list of some hugely successful people who dropped out of college and made gazillions!

Our advice: “Don’t do it!”

Here’s why, if you are truly planning on becoming an entrepreneur, you should stay in school:

Learn How to Learn. College teaches you much more than the subjects offered. Due to the course load, the number of classes you must take per day, and the limited amount of time you have to study, you simply won’t pass unless you develop a systematic approach to learning. You must make some assumptions about the material on a very general level, fill in the blanks and make adjustments to your assumption as you go. All the while you must outline the materials in a way that you can recall and use them – even if it’s only for an exam. You must learn how to learn. And that skill is essential for successful entrepreneurship in the real world.

Learn How to Juggle. College requires that you master another essential skill of entrepreneurship – juggling. You must juggle your time between classes, work, and social activities. You must remain healthy and get enough sleep. Most have to juggle their finances to be able to afford college. This means you must learn how to budget your time and your money. You must prioritize, sometimes going without and deferring gratification, all critical skills in the real world of entrepreneurship.

Learn How to Stick to It. Seeing things through is crucial in the world of entrepreneurship. Completing college demonstrates that you can finish what you start. Commitment and tenacity require practice and reap rewards. In the business world, if you pivot too often you will get the reputation of a quitter, someone not to be taken seriously when they say they are going to do something. As an entrepreneur, your customers buy from you because they believe you will do what you say. Your reputation is on the line.

If you are still are in doubt, then here’s two things you can do:

Take Some Humanities Courses. They are also known as the Liberal Arts or Liberal Studies. Successful entrepreneurs understand and properly use skills they have learned about communication, critical thinking, philosophy, psychology, history, and sociology. Those studies will give you an appreciation for others that will come in handy when selling your ideas to others and communicating leadership skills.

Work Part-Time for an Entrepreneur. Yes, get a job working for someone who is already doing what you want to do. It will give you insight and respect for what is involved. Watching a real entrepreneur face challenges, decide on priorities, and make tough decisions will prepare you for the road ahead.

You’ll notice we did not defend the content of formal education, but did defend the rigor and challenges necessary to see it through. The college experience itself forces discipline, focus and frugality at a time in your life when you need to develop these attributes. They will play a significant part in your future as an entrepreneur. So, stay in school and learn the skills successful entrepreneurs have before you hit the bricks!
