Terrific advice Bonnie and Michael! Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts admits many foreign students to their graduate programs. They can sometimes experience a higher barrier to job entry due to the employment laws in the U.S., so to help them build credibility, I encourage students to keep a record of the outcomes of assignments, projects and employment tasks to help build credibility and transparency into their resumes. When I hire a student in our entrepreneurship center, my first conversation is about "value-add". It gives them awareness of what this means from an individual as well as a team perspective. Then at future interviews, they can more easily voice their value proposition, citing several examples. (Also, it becomes easier for me to write a letter of recommendation or recommend them on Linked-In - because with their record keeping documents, they actually remind me of what value they added while they worked for me! Thank you for this important and insightful interview. I plan to share this program with my next group of student employees in the fall!
